ICCO in Honduras

Human Rights Defenders and activists in Honduras face enormous threats due to high levels of corruption, impunity and deep rooted links between corporate interests, organized crime and public servants. Land rights defenders of Indigenous Peoples have recently been targeted for their struggle to keep natural resources from extractive industries. An emblematic case was the murder of Bertha Cáceres, an iconic indigenous and environmental defender assassinated at her home in 2016.

What is ICCO doing?

In Honduras, ICCO supports indigenous communities in their process to legalize ancestral lands and develop sustainable management models for protected areas. ICCO has also strengthened women and LGBTI human rights defenders, and has economically empowered youth and farming cooperatives. Also it hopes to contribute in Reinforcing the capacity of mitigation and adaptation to climate change of the Community Based Organizations and Organizations of Indigenous Peoples, intensifying the management of knowledge and the implementation of climate actions and strategic policies.
