Towards a Sustainable Spices Initiative Platform in Indonesia

ICCO co-organized the event together with IDH, the Sustainable Trade Initiative and other partners from the Sustainable Spices Initiative (SSI) working group. The event served as an initial discussion for a future platform called the Sustainable Spices Initiative (SSI) Platform, in which all spice stakeholders can learn from each other and work together to address the pressing issues of sustainability around spice production.

The event was opened by the General Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia, Mr. Syukur Iwantoro. Kiswara Santi Prihandini (ICCO Indonesia Country Coordinator) attended the event as one of the speakers in the plenary session to talk about the issues farmers face in the spice industry.

Following the plenary, participants were divided into four groups based on their commodity of interest, to discuss the sustainability issues they face in their specific commodity. Many sustainability issues were shared among the different commodities, which highlighted the need for collaboration from the different stakeholders across commodities to work together in solving the challenges.

At the end of the event, each participant shared their opinion regarding the urgency of having a platform like SSI, agreeing that it would be good to have, and all of the participants look forward to continuing with the idea of an SSI community.

As an organization that has extensive experience working on sustainable spice issues, ICCO strongly supports the formation of SSI initiatives and is looking forward to contribute to the mission of making the spice industry more sustainable.
