Building Protection by Empowering People in Latin America

Start project:
  • 2012

In response to increased insecurity in Latin America and more specifically in Central America and Colombia, this regional program aimed to reduce the interconnected threats of violence, organized crime, gender inequality, social insecurity and limited economic opportunities for youth and women. Using a multi-stakeholder approach, with its Building Protection by Empowering People program ICCO Cooperation worked with civil society organizations, young people, local governments and businesses.

There is a high incidence of violence against women and young people in Central America and Colombia. Underlying social and political conditions, as well as structural weaknesses in governance, inhibit efforts to improve security. Persistent poverty, inequality, and unemployment leave large portions of the population susceptible to crime, and put the integrity and future of young people at risk. Given the limited opportunities available, young people and women are frequently displaced or forced to migrate.

ICCO Cooperation’s strategy is to promote and build security in the region by encouraging entrepreneurship and economic empowerment of young people. Our mission is to empower them so they can contribute to the economic and social development of their communities and countries.
The Building Protection by Empowering People in Latin America program started in 2012 with 14 implementing partners in different localities of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Colombia. It was designed to stimulate social and economic integration of vulnerable groups, whilst addressing the interconnected threats of violence, gender inequality and social insecurity.
