The Forest Governance Project, financed by the European Union, is developed in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, by a consortium of indigenous and community based organizations led by ICCO. In Las Segovias, (Central Nicaragua) it is implemented with the support of local organization CONICEFV, to strengthen operational capacities of the Chorotega Indigenous People, and their effective involvement in forest governance and sustainable management.

In the Pacific of Nicaragua, the indigenous peoples were practically exterminated along with their forests, customs and ancestral languages. In 2000, the Chorotega People organized themselves into a Coordination of the Chorotega Indigenous Peoples constituted by the towns of Cusmapa, San Lucas, Totogalpa, Telpaneca, the territory of San Antonio, Santa Barbara and the Town of Mozonte.
Currently they occupy an approximate area of 18,000 hectares divided among 40 communities.

The Council for Voluntary Forestry Certification (CONICEFV) is a National NGO that seeks to strengthen operational capacities and effective involvement of the Chorotega people in forest governance in REDD + and FLEGT in Nicaragua.

In the framework of this project, CONICEFV accompanies the construction of an Environmental Services business model for the Chorotega People, based on their cosmo vision and traditions.
