Forest Governance Project: MAPF

Start project:
  • 2017
Donors:
  • European Commission - EC
Partners:
  • ICCO

The Forest Governance Project, funded by the European Union, is developed in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, by a consortium of indigenous and community organizations led by ICCO. A strategic ally for the implementation of this project is the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (MAPF), to support the strengthening of the operational capacities of forest communities and their effective participation in forest governance and sustainable management.

Integrated by indigenous governments and community forestry organizations, the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (AMPB) is a space for coordination and exchange of territorial authorities that administer or influence the main forests of Mesoamerica. It works to strengthen dialogue (focused on community management of natural resources), and to influence governments and international actors so that conservation and climate balance strategies appropriately integrate the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Forest Communities.

Most of the organizations members of the implementing consortium of this project have been integrated into MAPF for many years. This platform will support capacity building actions for indigenous leaders and forest communities involved in this project, and it will foster their participation in regional and international discussion spaces related to forest governance.
