Afro-Colombian people of the Choco forests and mangroves of the Pacific shore have been fighting to secure their land rights and benefits of the natural resources within their territories. Current UN Climate Change debate on deforestation of tropical forests as a key component to manage climate change and green house gases emissions has opened a new opportunity for rural communities to consolidate land rights and also to access international funds related to carbon finance.

This project is placed in a vision towards the future of sustainable forests in the Choco region in which ecosystems are functioning and contributing to diverse type of environmental services including climate stability from reductions in deforestation. The vision includes local communities benefiting from their natural resources, strengthening their economic base through incomes from carbon finance mechanisms for avoided deforestation initiatives (REDD+ type of project), and options to access low carbon economies including energy efficiency alternatives.

ICCO has been supporting Climate and Forests initiatives in the Department of Choco in Colombia as part of a strategy to consolidate land rights access and control of natural resources.

Fondo Patrimonio Natural is a current partner of ICCO and COCOMOPOCA was a partner in the previous MFSII cycle.
