As per the study conducted, dairy is selected as a priority commodity for its value chain development in the four project intervention Woredas. It is one of the important livestock commodities that generates income, creates employment opportunities and provides highly nutritious food. The business is more of women friendly and has special role for socio-economic empowerment of women and fair distribution of wealth among family members.

Despite huge cattle population and suitable agro-ecologies for dairying in the project areas, the development of dairy is far below the desired level in the region. To mention few, improved dairy cattle breed accounts only less than 2% of the total cattle population in the country; production and productivity of dairy cattle is very low. For instance, average daily milk yield of a cow is around 1.32 liters with average lactation length of 6 months. Age at first calving and calving interval is very much extended. The major contributing factors for underdevelopment of dairy commodity in the region, among others, include traditional production system, inadequate input and service supply system, absence of adoptable technologies, underdeveloped marketing system and above all knowledge and skill gaps of all actors involved in dairy value chain development. To transform subsistence dairying to market oriented sustainable commodity, intervention is required at all stages of dairy value chain development.
