ICCO works in many countries in West Africa to develop the Shea Value chain and reduce poverty in the rural communities. For this particular project, ICCO-Cooperation and KIA have launched a joint effort to assist the women in Northern and Upper East Ghana. Through this initiative, the women cooperatives, will see a building of their capacity, better access to market and they will receive a training on vegetable food production for a more diversified nutrition and economic empowerment.

To contribute to poverty reduction in the Northern and Upper East of Ghana, the Presbyterian Agriculture Services (PAS/PCG) in partnership with ICCO and Kerk in Actie piloted a program in 2013-2016, dubbed; Poverty Reduction through Shea Chain Development. ICCO and KiA seeks to upscale this project by focusing on women groups mobilization, their capacity on Shea nuts quality production, market linkages, vegetable food production for enhance nutrition and economic empowerment.

Food for the World (FFW) plans to support food and nutrition security through WUZDA in the same communities. The program recognizes that the target women involved in the shea nut collection during the dry season are also involved in the use of organic waste for vegetable food production during another part of the year with Ghana WASH Alliance WASH nexus for food and nutrition security.

Therefore PCG and the key WASH partners (eg WUZDA, URBANET etc) involved in vegetable food production will collaborate (through PA coalition) with the same target women involve in shea nut and food production in the communities.Through the Programmatic Approach, the project will seek to create synergy and value addition with Sheanut value chain and use of organic waste in food production.

Thus through increased income from shea and vegetable production, it is envisaged that the target women become food and nutrition secured.
