Youth leadership in indigenous communities

Countries:
Start project:
  • 2016

The project aims to promote indigenous youth empowerment in 15 Sutiaba communities in León. With this project proposal ACJ specifically aims to develop capacities among indigenous youth incorporating their own identity and culture, to generate conditions to promote peace culture and prevent violence, inequalities and exclusion, and to facilitate spaces to strengthen indigenous youth leadership.

According to focus groups conducted with community leaders, mostly young people (58%) from 15 communities, the main problems affecting young indigenous people in Sutiava communities are: unemployment, lack of education, teenage pregnancies, high vulnerability to drug use, lack of access to recreation and domestic violence. Most causes are determined by the lack of opportunities for young people, family disintegration and lack of morality on parents to instill positive values in young people.
